 Rebuilt Mattison Rotary Surface Grinder

This grinder has precision face ground thrust bearings in the spindle to hold precise tolerances. We replaced the table drive with an Allen-Bradley AC motor drive so that the operator can change table speeds with the turn of a dial at the operator's station. We changed the lubrication system so that critical points on the slides are lubricated automatically.

The coolant system is modified to redirect coolant to a separate pan to trap grinding grit to greatly reduce plugging of the lower parts and main coolant tank. Mattison grinders have V-type guide ways on the carriage and vertical slides to prevent movement. We like to rebuild machines from the 1950's era because of how heavily they are built. These machines make a great foundation for a solid machine tool. This combined with modern technology will give you a reliable and precise machine that will last for many years.

Improvements we’ve made include:
  • Scrape slides
  • Resurface way beds with moglice to reduce wear/friction
  • Slide is squared with vertical slide within .001 inches
  • Magnetic control is replaced with a new solid state
  • Install Trabon automatic lubrication system
  • Motor disassembled and cleaned; bearings replaced
  • Replace motor bearings in rear machine motors
  • Replace table ball bearings
  • New electrical panel
  • Update table speed drive as described above
  • New push buttons at operator's station
  • Laser align motor and spindle
  • New V- Belts
  • All new bearings on bottom of carriage slide with seals
  • Replace and update electrical systems where needed
  • Replace slide guard and mount new operator's door
  • Replace table guards
  • Rework dresser for wheel
  • Install an automatic grease system for bearings requiring regular maintenance
  • New top plate for magnetic chuck
  • Spindle is completely rebuilt
  • All worn bearings and bushings are replaced
  • Precision Laser Alignment is used to insure surfaces are flat and square
